ITU Election: Outgoing Scribe Hails Nigeria’s Succession Bid
The Deputy Secretary
General of International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Dr Hamadoun Toure, has described Nigeria’s loss at the just concluded conference in South Korea as gallant for taking the process to a fourth round.
The ITU scribe, said the union has not experienced such development since its inception.
The Tide gathered that a Nigerian, Mr Shola Taylor, had wanted to occupy the ITU’s seat as its secretary general, but was stopped by Mr Malcom Johnson from United Kingdom.
Toure, noted that Nigeria’s performance in the election, has shown her interest in the development of the telecommunication industry.
Shola, whose bid received President Jonathan’s nod, lost to the British citizen Monday, in South Korea.
The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, has said that Nigerians would work with the new leadership of the union as to move it forward.
She also recalled that Taylor has a lot of experience in the telecom industry, saying he ran a wonderful campaign and has done Nigeria very well.
Other delegates to the election, also blamed Nigerian lost to what they called “geo-politics”, adding that Taylor would have done better, should he had succeeded as ITU’s Deputy Secretary-General.
Narrating his experience, Taylor said it was an unprecedented election, hinting that the union only recorded fourth round in the first time.
He has lauded the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, over her support during the election, as he promised to work harder in his bid to move the country’s telecom industry forward.
