US Partners UNIPORT On e-Development …Opens American Corner
The United States of
America Government has opened an “American Corner” at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State as part of its partnership with Nigeria on educational development.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the US Consul General, Mr Jeffery J. Hawkins Jnr said the corner would increase opportunities for learning, interaction and cooperation between the two countries.
Hawkins Jnr noted that the corner, as part of the university, will serve as a haven of information and learning, adding that the corner would be free and open to everyone to use.
“It would be free and open to every one-ordinary citizens, students, non-governmental organisation representatives, business people, artisans and government officials.
“We hope you will think of this corner as a small piece of America within Port Harcourt. The corner will play a key role in expanding US contacts with Nigerian institutions in the region.”
The Consul General promised that US Embassy in Nigeria would continue to support the corner with resource materials and provide guidance where needed.
On his part, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Joseph Ajienka commended the embassy for bringing the partnership to the institution, saying that the corner would also be of help to people traveling to America for educational pursuit or other things.
Prof Ajienka encouraged students to make use of the corner, as there are information to be accessed by students.
He said that the university was making effort to upgrade the library to enable students download information simultaneously.
Conducting the entourage round the American Corner, the university Liberian, Dr Obiageli Nwodo called on the consulate to assist the institution in upgrading the e-library, adding that it is becoming frustrating for students to access information in the library.
She also reiterated the need for the maintenance of the generator set which is a challenge to the institution.
Dr Nwodo, however, commended the consulate for what she called an asset to the university community.
In his remarks, the former Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Prof Simeon Achinewhu (a fellow of Fulbright Alumni) emphasized the usefulness of the corner to the students and Fulbright fellows.
