Women’s Empowerment: FG To Launch ICT Class For Girls
TheMinister
of Communications Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, said that the Federal Government would launch Information and Communication Technology (ICT) class for girls so as to develop their interest in pursuing science-related careers.
The minister disclosed this last Tuesday in Abuja at the ongoing 53rd Council Meeting and 11th Annual Conference for Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), tagged “Innovation Through Broadband’’.
Johnson said that the essence of the programme was to encourage girls to study science-related courses and pursue science-related careers afterwards.
“We need to improve and empower more women in ICT and we have seen a lot women so empowered in developing countries,’’ Johnson said.
She said that the essence of the forum was to ensure the provision of affordable Internet connection for the people, adding that there was also the need to empower Nigerian women in ICT usage.
The minister said that rural women could also be exposed to ICT applications, if they were given sound educational opportunities.
However, Johnson said that the CTO forum was aimed at ensuring that member countries developed themselves in the use of technology by improving their ICT infrastructure to enhance socio-economic development.
She said that the forum would be beneficial to Nigeria because “we are learning from what others are doing to improve on our broadband plans.
“ICT use leads to improved efficiency, effectiveness and productivity and it also facilitates improvements in the people’s welfare.
“Government, as the developer and implementer of policy and regulations, plays a critical role in defining and securing the future of its citizens.
“A country’s economic and social goals can only be said to have been met when a substantial proportion of its population is included in the benefits that accrue from the successful implementation of its policies,’’ she said.
Johnson said that the major challenge facing this year’s CTO forum was how to expand Internet connectivity, while making ICT more accessible and affordable to greater proportions of the world’s population.
