ISPON Boss Seeks Policy On Software Dev
The President, Institute of Software of Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Prof. Chris Uwaje, last Saturday urged the Federal Government to formulate a policy that would encourage local software development.
Uwaje told pressmen in Lagos that putting favourable policy in place would enhance the growth of the sector.
He said that presently, there was no policy that could encourage indigenous software developers to compete favourably with their foreign counterparts. The ISPON president said that it had become necessary to replicate the success of the telecommunication sector in the software industry.
Uwaje said that the country needed to concentrate on data, the Internet and e-business, in building a more robust and successful Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) industry.
“Software development is critical to the development and growth of the ICT industry. I have heard about Nigerians developing software that is being used offshore, and paid in foreign currency.
“The country need to create that industry here, because it is critical to the success of the sector,” the don said.
Uwaje said that more policies, programmes and plans should be embarked upon by the government, to move from a resource-dependent to knowledge-based economy.
“Nigeria can be transformed into a major ICT hub where knowledge, technology and innovation are used as tools not to only drive wealth, but to empower the citizens.
“It can be deployed to provide security, promote efficiency and national competitiveness for sustainable socio-economic development.
“Nigeria has had tremendous success in the telecommunications sector, as a result of the liberalisation of the sector.
“Today, we have one of the fastest growing telecommunication markets in the world, as well as the largest mobile subscriber base in sub-Saharan Africa.
“Unfortunately, the ICT sector, for a variety of reasons, has not been successful,” Uwaje said.
