Expert Decries Poor Funding Of National Parks
The Conservator-General of the Federation, Mr Haruna Abubakar, has decried the continued poor funding of the seven national parks in the country.
Abubakar expressed the concern in an interview with Journalists in Abuja.
He said that inadequate funding was responsible for the slow development of the seven parks in the country.
The conservator general said that paucity of funds had crippled activities in the parks, preventing the parks from contributing to the country’s economy.
Abubakar said that paucity of funds had stalled the provision of proper roads networks linking the parks as well as inadequate publicity to help achieve the mandate of the parks.
He said the Federal Government is trying very hard in terms of funding the national parks but because of the size of the national parks, you can imagine like Gashaka Gumti National Park is about 7000 square kilometres that is as big as Osun and Ogun states.
“In order for us to be able to effectively manage that place there is a need to provide road network and then infrastructure in terms of road culverts. ’’
‘’Because of inadequate funding we are finding it very difficult to be able to meet up with most of this demand and that has been creating a lot of constraints as far as park development is concerned in the country. ‘’
According to him, there is need to construct roads leading to the parks to enable more people visit the parks.
He said the parks were a symbol of the country’s beauty and natural heritage which had great tourism potential hence the need for proper funding.
Abubakar said that there had been a move to relocate people who lived near the parks in order to protect wildlife, habitats and other resources but the plan was not achievable due to lack of funds.
He also identified poaching as a major challenge slowing the development of the parks, adding such illegal activities had posed a serious problem to the parks as hunters continued to kill animals.
