Plateau To Partner US Varsity On ICT
The Plateau State Government is to partner with the ICT University, Louisiana, United States to provide affordable online Information and Communication Technology courses.
The Commissioner for Science and Technology, Prof. Comfort Piwuna, made this known in Jos last Tuesday in an interview with newsmen.
Piwuna said that the courses include certificates, Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s programmes and Ph D,
The commissioner said that the Plateau State University, Bokkos and the Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin-Ladi, had been marked as pilot centres for the programme.
“The Plateau State Government has agreed to provide the centres and the halls, while the American ICT university will provide the required facilities needed for the effective take-off of the programme.’’
She said the partnership would provide additional platform for Plateau citizens to have access to ICT skills and be in tune with the technology-driven world of the 21st century.
According to her, the partnership has become imperative, following increasing demands of ICT skills in all sectors of the economy.
“There is currently no sector of the Nigerian economy and the world at large that does not require IT-inclined skilled workforce.
“However, access to institutions and other IT training centres remains very minimal.
“It is our duty as a government to ensure that we provide our citizens with the needed information, knowledge and skills to be able to compete favourably with their contemporaries both in and outside the country.
“Consequently, this partnership is one out of the many efforts by the current administration to provide the Plateau citizens with the needed skills to survive in today’s information technology competitive world.’’
“We have gone very far with the negotiations. In fact, the university’s team will be coming to Plateau in April to inspect the facilities in the proposed centres and sign the Memorandum of Understanding with the state government.
“The partnership, if concluded, will make Nigeria the third country after Cameroon and South Africa to benefit from such partnership,’’ she added.
