Rivers State Government, says it would sponsor about 2,000 pilgrims to Jerusalem this year.
The Sole Administrator of the State Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board, Monsgnr. John Wangbu disclosed this while briefing newsmen in his office in Port Harcourt.
According to him, the screening exercise of intending pilgrims has commenced and is for only those who are shortlisted.
“Today last Wednesday the screening exercise has started for this year’s pilgrimage. I want to let you know that Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC) chose the state to kick-off the screening in the nation.” “Wangbu said.
He said that the board would ensure that only those who are physically fit would embark on the journey, saying that the journey is stressful.
Monsgnr Wangbu stated that pilgrimage is not a jamboree, but spiritual and period to pray for the nation, particularly Rivers State.
“I want to say that only those healthy would be allowed to travel, because we will not like to record any form of casualty in the Holy land.
“People should not take pilgrimage as a jamboree, or a recreational activity. Government sponsors people to go for spiritual upliftment and pray for the state,” he added.
The sole administrator used the opportunity to commend the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi for sponsoring about 2,000 pilgrims which is the highest in Nigeria.
He advised pilgrims to be good ambassadors of the state and the country in general.
“I am advising all those that are travelling to be of good behaviour and conduct in Jerusalem. They should also obey the laws of the place, so that they will be good ambassadors,” he stated.
