Bayelsa Civil Servants Risk 10 -Year Jail Term
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa, last Friday in Yenagoa said the government has forwarded a Bill to the state House of Assembly aimed at punishing public servants involved in any form of fraud.
Dickson said the bill provides for 10 years imprisonment without option of fine on anyone found culpable in financial crimes and other sharp practices.
The governor said at a briefing held at the Government House on the activities of his administration, expressed confidence that the bill would receive speedy passage by the Assembly.
“We still have a few civil servants who are carrying out sharp practices. We have resolved that anybody found guilty will serve 10 years in prison without an option of fine.
“So for those of you who think you are smart, you can’t outsmart this system, and I will ensure that the system will get at each and everyone of you with your collaborators. “Those of you who falsify your age declarations, your retirement age and salary grade levels, we will catch you.
“And let me put you on notice, I don’t want to touch you, we don’t want to reach you, but once you are caught you will see what will happen”, he warned.
On the money that accrued to the government, Dickson said that the state received about N13.4 billion from the Federation Account in June, while about N2.3 billion was deducted up front leaving the state with about N11 billion.
Out of the figure, he said the government had paid N3.9 billion as salary in June, a drastic reduction from the N6 billion paid at the inception of the administration, while only N131 million was paid as salary to political office holders.
The governor disclosed that he had directed the Auditor-General of the state to produce a quarterly audited account of the state for members of the public to access.
He announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operation in the state with effect from the end of July.
