Private Varsity Shut In Delta
A private tertiary institution, Faith University in Warri, Delta, has been closed down for allegedly operating illegally.
The Delta State Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Hope Eghagha, confirmed the closure in Asaba on Wednesday.
He said that the university, located on Fani Kayode Street in the oil city, was directed to stop operations because it was not registered with the National Universities Commission (NUC).
The order on the institution to close down was given by the State Government after liaising with the NUC.
The commissioner noted that the university was running degree programmes illegally “because it is not registered with the NUC and therefore, has no authority to operate as a university.
“We have directed Faith University in Warri to stop its degree programmes, pending when it gets NUC approval.
“The government checked the school and found that it has no status of even a big secondary school and further enquiry revealed that it is offering degree programmes to students illegally.
“We also got in touch with the NUC, which confirmed that the school was not known to it and directed that the State Government should close it down.”
Meanwhile, a new student in the school who pleaded anonymity told newsmen in Asaba on Wednesday, that he was offered admission into the university to study Accounting and had completed all admission processes.
It was not possible to speak with anyone involved in the ownership or management of the institution as the premises was shut.
But the school is believed to be owned by a Pentecostal Church with headquarters in the Isoko area of the state.
Its owners, including a traditional ruler, were said to be mainly from that part of the state.
The university was said to have commenced operations in 2007 as a Theology Centre, where members of a particular church and interested members of the public were being trained to become pastors.
The institution continued in that manner for about two years before it suddenly announced its elevation to a university in 2010 and started degree programmes in the arts and social sciences.
