Ochei Is New Delta Assembly Speaker
The Delta House of Assembly on Tuesday, elected Mr Victor Ochei, representing Aniocha North Constituency as its Speaker.
Ochei was elected immediately after Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan proclaimed the first session through a letter read by the Clerk of the House, Mr Raymond Yavbieri.
Uduaghan in the letter said he issued the proclamation in line with Section 105 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999.
The section read that “the person elected as governor shall have the power to issue a proclamation for the holding of the first session of the fifth Assembly”.
After the proclamation, the immediate past Speaker of the House, Mr Sam Obi, nominated Ochei as Speaker and the nomination was seconded by Mr Julius Okpoko of DPP, representing Okpe constituency.
The nomination was unanimously adopted by the 27 members, who were present at the inauguration ceremony.
The Former Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr Basil Ganagana, representing Patani constituency was also re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the House.
Ganagana was nominated by Mr Monday Igbuya, representing Sapele constituency and seconded by Mr Samuel Mariere, representing Ughelli North 1.
The Tide’s source reports that out of 29 seats in the state House of Assembly, only 27 were represented, as representatives for Ughelli South and Burutu II were yet to emerge.
According to the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) in Delta, the two constituencies election results are inconclusive.
In his acceptance speech, Ochei thanked Uduaghan for making the inauguration of the fifth Assembly possible through the instrumentality of the proclamation that paved the way for the ceremony.
He also thanked the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and Democratic People’s Party (DPP), whose members were represented in the Fifth Assembly.

The principal officers are; Mr Monday Igbuya of PDP as Majority Leader of the House, Mr Johnson Erijo of PDP, as the Deputy Majority Leader.
