Youths Protest Shell’s Romance With Rep
Youths of Aminigboko community of Emughan clan in the Abua/Odual local government area of Rivers State, Tuesday, staged a peaceful demonstration against the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) limited, over the continued romance with a representative who had been allegedly disowned by the community.
The youths, numbering about 200 protested at the gate of the Rumuobioakani industrial area of SPDC accusing the company of instigating and funding Mr. Promise Igoma, to cause disaffection and unrest in Aminigboko community.
The youths blamed SPDC for recognising Igoma as head of Akiro family in inspite of the fact that Igoma has been reportedly removed as the head of the family.
One of the elders of the community, Chief Jonathan Garricks, noted that the romance between Shell and Igoma was a deliberate spite on them by the company.
He claimed that Mr. Igoma in a letter addressed to the Akiro family dated March 8, 2000, formally resigned his position as acting head of the family and that Shell was duly informed of the development in writing, and wondered why the oil company had continued to do business with him.
He, therefore, appealed to the SPDC to stop dealing with Igoma on its behalf in any matter concerning Akiro/Ukwo families in particular and Aminigboko in general, adding that the family has since replaced Igoma with Chief Tubo Garricks as the substantive head of the family.
Shell’s Community Relations Co-ordinator, Mr. Obomanu Kiri, thanked them for maintaining peace during the protests, but however, advised them to channel their grievance to the Rivers State Ministry of Local gGnment and Chieftaincy Affairs for solution.
According to him, SPDC has no authority in the settlement of such matters while promising to take their complaints to the appropriate quarters for necessary action.
Some of the placards carried by the youths read; “Shell, you should revoke any contract awarded to promise Igoma, “Shell wants to kill us, Igoma wants to kill us” amongst others.
