RSG Poised To Reduce Disease Burden On Residents
The Rivers State Government has reiterated its determination to reduce the disease burden of all residents in the state.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi stated this during the commissioning and handing over of the Buguma primary health care centre at Lawson Polo, Buguma, headquarters of Asari Toru Local Government Area.
The Governor expressed optimism that the Buguma health centre will be one of the best managed primary health care centres.
He urged the community to partner with government to protect facilities provided and utilise the property as the health centre was built to meet health needs and not for decoration. The Governor was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parker.
Earlier the Kalabari monarch and Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers, T.J.T Princewill, Amachree the XI, expressed gratitude to the state government for the health centre and assured government of maximum utilisation of the facilities provided. He however requested that more Doctors should be posted to them to enable the health care run on a 24 hours basis and urged the state government to construct a ring road to facilitate access to the health centre. Meanwhile, the State government has joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2010 World Aids Day which has as its theme “Universal Access and Human Rights.”
Speaking during the celebration which coincided with the commissioning and handling over of the Rumuepirikom Primary Health Centre in Obio Akpor Local Government Area, the wife of the Governor, Dame Judith Amaechi said that there are 33.3 million people living with HIV worldwide, including 2.5 million children.
She added that in 2009 alone, some 2.6 million people became infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS.
