NGO Raises N200m For Healthcare
Over 200 million naira was realised at the fund-raising dinner hosted by a Non-governmental Organisation (NGO), The Centre for Values and Culture (CVC) for the building of a Mother and Child Health Centre in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.
The NGO which was founded by the wife of the Bayelsa State Governor, Mrs. Alayingi Sylva, had been in the fore front of mass mobilisation and campaigns against cancer among women and various child killer diseases.
The grand event which took place at the Banquet Hall, Government House, drew personalities from all walks of life, including multi-nationals and corporate organisations operating in the state.
Our correspondent reports that the highest donation of one hundred million naira was made by Anambra-born billionaire, Chief Emeka Offor, Managing Director of Chrome Group, who was the chief launcher of the fund-raising, represented by Chief Joseph Penawou.
The CVC is founded by Mrs Alayingi Sylva, the wife of the Bayelsa Governor, to combat cancer among women and various child killer diseases.
While speaking, Mrs. Sylva enjoined everyone to donate generously towards the building of the centre, adding that the scourge of cancer accounted for about 7.5 million global deaths annually.
According to her, “cancer has become yet another threat and challenge to human race. The fund raiser is to take a step and do one little thing that would ultimately culminate in the saving of precious human lives.’’
First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who was represented by the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Helen Mark, pledged support to the building and development of the centre.
She enjoined individuals and cooperate organisations to support the project to give hope to the hopeless in the society.
Wife of the Rivers Governor, Mrs. Judith Ameachi pledged the support of the Rivers State government to the development of the Centre, and donated N1million naira to the project on her personal capacity.
Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State, who was full of praises for his wife, pledged to “fill in the blank spaces” left at the end of the ceremony.
