NCC Wants Prosecution Over Multiple Taxes
Following the high level of multiple taxations by different agencies on telecommunications companies, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), has charged telecom operators to prosecute any state agency over multiple taxes.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, gave the charge at a recent meeting with chief executives of telecom operators in the country.
Juwah noted that there had been complaints from telecom operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) over the imposition of various levies on them at the expansion of coverage to other parts of the country stating that the telecom company could charge such illegitimate agency to court.
He stated that the activities of the telecommunications companies were geared towards uplifting the standard of the country to meeting up with the developed countries adding that the illegitimate and excess levies on them would only demoralise the companies thereby reducing the nation’s status in terms of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) trends.
The NCC boss maintained that only the government and NCC approved agencies had the right to levy charges on the telecom companies, adding that any agency outside the two bodies would be responsible for its actions.
The meeting discussed, among other issues, reduction in tariff, right of way, accelerated broad-band initiatives and private public partnership for development in the ICT industry.
On the Right of Way (ROW), Juwah stated that the Nigerian Communications Commission would meet with state authorities to ensure easy access for telecom operators to carry out their services of network provision and laying of infrastructure that are necessary for the advancement of the industry.
He affirmed that NCC was ready to partner with telecom operators in the implementation of mobile number portability and promised to be on the front burner after the SIM Pack registration exercise.
