A’Ibom Oil Spill: Clan Head Urges Dialogue
A Community leader in Eket, Akwa Ibom, has appealed to oil communities in the area to embrace dialogue in resolving disputes resulting from frequent oil spills.
The Clan Head of Afaha Eket in Eket Local Government of the state, Chief Nathaniel Oduneyie, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen in Eket.
Oduneyie appealed to the protesting youths to embrace dialogue instead of resorting to violence.
Youths in Eket protested against Saturday’s oil spill from Qua Iboe oil fields.Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), an affiliate of U.S. oil firm ExxonMobil, in a statement signed by MPN’s Executive Director, Mrs Gloria Essien-Danner, confirmed a pipeline leak from one of its offshore platforms.
But the clan head said that the issue would be taken up with the oil firm to find a lasting solution to the frequent oil spills in the area.
He said that though the protests were peaceful, dialogue remained the most effective tool in conflict resolution.
“I was informed that there was an oil spill on Saturday and I went out to see things for myself.
“The creeks have been stained with crude oil and by the time I came back, the youths of Eket came out to protest.
“I have just asked them to embrace dialogue because I am an advocate of peace and I hope the company would not take my peaceful disposition for granted,” Oduneyie said. He lamented the oil spills and said that they were detrimental to the economic activities of fishermen and the health of the general public.
“I love fresh fish a lot but I discovered that crude oil spills had contaminated and poisoned the fishes,’’ Oduneyie said. According to him, the oil firm has scheduled a meeting with the host community to resolve the face-off between both parties resulting from the present oil spill incident.
Ibeno community, also in Akwa Ibom, experiences spill incidents on December 4, 2009, March 24, 2010 and May 1.
