Experts Decry Erosion Menace In Lagos
Lagos metropolis, al
though, adjudged to be below the sea level geographically, coastal and shoreline erosions remain the major economical challenges confronting the country’s commercial capital.
However, the President of Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG), Mr Kunle Awobodu, believed that the government should step up efforts to mitigate climate change issues.
According to him, so far, the federal government is just paying lip service to climate change issues. What we are doing in Nigeria in the name of tackling the effects of climate change is more of an academic exercise.
“So far, efforts are not being made to reduce depletion of the ozone layers.
“Emission of dangerous carbons is going on indiscriminately” he said.
Awobodu said that sand mining activities were ongoing around Lagoons and Rivers indiscriminately without monitoring and sanctions.
He said the governments had overlooked the implications of sand mining activities on the sea and the resultant beach erosions around coastal regions at alarming rate.
According to him, the governments are not living up to the standard of enforcing its various laws and holding its officials responsible for negligence of duty.
He described blocked drainage systems including refuse littering the metropolis and highways as a bomb waiting to explode, as regards climate change in Nigeria.
Prof. Peter Nwolo, Surveying and Informatics Department, University of Lagos, said that the construction of hard engineering works at the Lagos Bar Beach had further increased coastal and beach erosion in Lagos State.
Former chairman, Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) Lagos Island Chapter, Mr John Ekoko, said that using concrete on a water front was not the solution to beach erosion.
Checks on ecological fund showed that it was being managed by Ecological Fund office in the presidency. Statistics from there showed that the office tookconsultants and contractors to their projects nationwide and disbursed funds based on the agreement and progress being made in its execution.
But it was alleged that the ecological funds were being used as security votes for the president and state governor’s security votes.
According to Prof. Nwilo and Dr Tunji Adejumo President, society of Landscape Architects of Nigeria (SLAN), the ecological funds had been misappropriated over the years.
Nwilo said that since late 80s. One per cent was being paid into the ecological fund from the Federal Account monthly.
He said that the allocation had since increased to two and three per cent over the years.
