Police Caution Motorists On Number Plates
The Edo State Police
Command has warned motorists in the state against covering their number plates with stickers of political parties or gubernatorial aspirants.
The warning was issued in a statement signed by Deputy Commissioner Abdulkadir Mohammed and made available to newsmen in Benin.
The statement called for the immediate removal of such coverings, emphasising that the command was ready to apprehend and prosecute violators.
It said the move was part of measures to get motorists renew their vehicle documents and put them in road worthy conditions.
“This is part of a state-wide operation to get motorists show their vehicle documents and it will commence on March 1 and ends on March 5,” it said.
The statement further said the exercise would involve agencies such as the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and officials of the state Transport Ministry.
“The exercise will involve checking/inspection of vehicle documents, physical inspection of vehicles to check road-worthiness, checking/inspection of drivers’ licences and clearing of obstructions that impede free flow of traffic, “ it said.
Motorists were, therefore, urged to renew their vehicle documents and put them in roadworthy conditions.
The command, through the statement, also advised motorists to either remove tinted glasses fixed on their vehicles or obtain appropriate permits to have them on.
“All sirens and revolving lights fixed without due approval must also be dismantled.
“The exercise has become necessary following the alarming rate of fake, forged or cloned vehicle documents.
“The use of tinted glasses without permit, covering of number plates for no just cause and the irresponsible operation of vehicles without licences have constituted anti-social behaviours and further aided the commission of crime,” it said.
The statement disclosed that mobile courts would be sitting simultaneously throughout the period of the exercise to ensure quick dispensation of justice, protection of the rights of citizens and preservation of the rule of law.
