NNPC To Construct More Filling Stations
The Nigerian National
Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has promised to establish more outlets to sell Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to users of cars that run on such gas.
The Group Executive Director, Gas and Power, NNPC, Dr David Ige, who disclosed this at a stakeholders’ forum in Lagos, recently, said the plan became imperative to enable users get the product to fuel their cars.
He said a pilot scheme on the use of compressed natural gas for cars was initiated in Benin City, the Edo State capital by NNPC, and remarked that the scheme was a success.
“Let me give you a brief analysis of what NNPC had done. “The corporation started a pilot project in Benin City and it was successful. There are six gas-filling stations in Benin City. There are over 4,000 cars running on natural gas in Benin”.
“It is impossible to drive a vehicle from Benin to Lagos on gas. NNPC would replicate this in other parts of the country”, said Ige.
He said a new gas station was opened on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to enable people buy gas for the cars.
Ige regretted the low awareness on compressed natural gas, promising that NNPC would do something on it and said that it is quite unfortunate that many people do not even know that there are cars that use natural gas in the country.
He stated that government was committed to the development of the nation’s gas industry and remarked that more people would access gas for their cars soon.
Ige noted that efforts were being made to ensure that more people use gas for socio-economic activities stressing that Nigeria has gas that is enough to meet the growing needs of the populace.
