UNEP Report: Stakeholders Meet In Geneva, Oct
The Advisory Committee
on the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report on the oil pollution of Ogoniland will meet October in Geneva Switzerland to discuss the work plan for the implementation of the Report.
The country Director of Stakeholders Democracy Network (SDN) Mr. Inemo Samiama disclosed this in an interview with The Tide while reacting to the proposed plan by the federal government to implement the report.
Mr. Samiama, who described the move by the federal government as a welcome development, however, urged for caution as it is not the first time government would be making the promise to implement the report.
He, however, said that the move this time around seems more realistic as every stakeholder in the project has been given a role to play in the implementation programme.
According to him, all impacted communities have been made to be active participants in all the stages of the programme while the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) will play merely an oversight role in the programme.
“I say cautious and optimism; cautious in the sense that this is not the first time these promises are being made, optimism because this look more realistic than before” he said.
Mr. Samiama said that civil society groups in the Niger Delta welcomed the move by the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources, Deziani Allison Madueke, and are ready to work with her to ensure the success of the exercise.
He used the occasion to call on all stakeholders in the region to work with the federal government to ensure the success of the exercise.
