Amaechi’s LG Tours Elicit Mixed Reactions
Mixed reactions have
continued to trail the ongoing tour of local government areas in Rivers State by Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
While the opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) described the tour as ill-conceived, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), welcomed the tour as a continuation of the governor’s Town Hall meeting with the people..
The PDP, through the Special Assistant to the Chairman, Mr Jerry Needam, condemned Governor Amaechi’s last minute tour of the 23 local government areas of the state, saying, such programme was driven by ill- conceived motive and attempt to intimidate and influence the electorate ahead of the 2015 elections.
The PDP in the statement said its criticism of the ongoing meeting between the governor and the people was a grand plan and action by the APC leadership in the state to publicise the party and recruit political thugs and electoral mercenaries in the various LGAs.
But, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mr. Chris Finebone described the PDP’s statement as unfortunate and illogical.
According to him, the leadership of the PDP in the State was either suffering from deficit of logical reasoning or clearly bereft of any iota of sincerity.
He stated that the visit of the governor to the various local government areas in the State was to appraise the government’s various projects and to get feedbacks from the electorate.
Also, the Publicity Secretary, Port Harcourt Chapter of the APC, Mr. Loveday Chukwu, said he saw nothing wrong in the tour, stressing that the governor has the constitutional powers to visit the areas under his jurisdictions.
He urged the people to disregard the PDP’s comments, saying, previous attempts by the party to deceive the people and destroy democracy had failed..
Chukwu, a former councillor in the Port Harcourt City Council, wondered why the PDP has not seen anything good in the present administration, saying, the party was obviously afraid of APC’s outstanding performance in the State.

APC Resumes Electronic Membership Registration Nationwide
In a statement issued yesterday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Felix Morka, said the exercise would take place in all wards and designated centres nationwide.
He called on existing members to update their records, while encouraging new entrants to join the party through the digital platform.
“As the electronic membership registration exercise resumes in all wards and designated locations nationwide, we urge existing members to validate their membership while new members are encouraged to register and join the progressive family,” Mr Morka said.
According to him, eligibility for registration is limited to individuals aged 18 and above who possess a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
The party said the initiative is part of efforts to modernise its operations by transitioning to a digital database that would enhance record accuracy and accessibility.
Mr Morka noted that the e-registration would “digitise the party’s membership register, ensure the integrity of records, and enhance efficient access to membership data for planning and management decisions.”
He added that the move is also aimed at promoting internal democracy within the party and strengthening its commitment to democratic innovation.
The APC had previously introduced electronic registration as part of broader reforms to streamline its membership system and improve organisational efficiency.
