Traders Shun Weekly Sanitation
Some traders in Osogbo have adopted a sit-at-home strategy to avoid the weekly environmental sanitation exercise in Osun.
Our correspondent reports that the Osun Government had set aside every Thursday of the week for the sanitation programme for traders and government offices.
The three-hour exercise is scheduled for between 7a.m to 10 a.m on Thursdays.
Correspondent , however, observed that instead of clearing their environment during the sanitation hours, many traders prefer to stay home until 10. a.m.
Our correspondent monitoring the situation reports that several shops were locked with nobody to clear the surroundings.
Retailers and shop owners around government offices and schools were, however, seen participating in the sanitation exercise.
Mrs Oreoluwa Oladeji, who sells provision and snacks in front of a school at Okefia area of Osogbo, told newsmen that she was already used to the weekly exercise.
On his part, Mr Soji Fadehan, the General Manager, Osun State Broadcasting Corporation, Osogbo, said members of staff have been complying with the exercise.
Fadehan said: “The corporation has even provided branded t-shirts to be worn by all staff on Thursdays to comply with the directive of government.’’
Mr Ganiyu Oyeladun, the General Manager, Osun Waste Management Agency, told newsmen on phone that “the agency is unhappy with traders who sit at home when they were supposed to be cleaning their environment.
“We have also observed the development, we will do what we need to do legally to discourage the ugly trend.
“I am sure that the people of the state appreciate a clean environment, but some will just want to do it at their own time.
