NEMA Assures Lake Nyos’s Downstream Communities Of Safety
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said Thursday that adequate measures had been taken to ensure the safety of Nigerians living downstream Lake Nyos in Cameroon.
The Head of Operations of the agency’s office in Gombe State, Mr Apollos Jediel, gave the assurance in an interview with newsmen in Bauchi, recently.
“That is why we have the Kashi-Milla Dam; it is one of the measures put in place; then we also have Early Warning Alert located in that particular area.
”The threat is bound to happen, so the Early Warning Alert will enlighten the communities around; educate them, as we have different languages in that surrounding areas.
‘’So that they can be able to be evacuated or they can be able to run away from the scene; these are some of the measures put in place.’’
On the 2013 flood prediction by NIMET, Jediel said that NEMA had taken precautionary measures in the event of any uncertainties.
“This NIMET prediction, they predicted that 2013, the flood will be higher than the one of 2012, what NEMA did was to put enlightenment campaign.
“We have a lot of posters now; jingles are going on in radio and television stations in order to educate people to clear their drainage and gutters; and that they should not dump their refuse on waterways.
“They should not build on waterways; they should move to higher grounds for safety; this is what we are doing.
“But we have relief materials in our stock in case if there is a flood; this is something that you cannot avert when it happens, so if people are displaced, you certainly have to come to their aid.
“And we have personnel, search and rescue personnel, that if the flood happens, we could be able to evacuate them to a safer ground.
“And we have also identified safer grounds in the three states we are handling.”
