Red Cross Assists 30,000 Cameroonian IDPs In C’ River
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has assured 30,000 Cameroonian in Internally Displaced Camps in Cross River of its humanitarian service to alleviate their plight.
Secretary General, NRCS, Alhaji Abubakar Kende, disclosed this yesterday during the inauguration of the remodeled building of the state branch in Calabar.
He explained that Red Cross had hundreds of volunteers spread across various IDPs camps in the state providing humanitarian services.
He said that NRCS provide food, toiletries, medicare, clothing and other services to the IDPs.
According to him, NRCS has the tradition of assisting victims of violence and natural disaster across the country.
“As we commission this remodeled building today, I wish to say that this will enhance and boost the humanitarian service to IDPs across the state.
“Presently, we are providing healthcare, food, water and sanitation and other services to 30,000 Cameroonian IDPs in the state.
“I want to assure them of our continued support until something permanent is done to return them back to their country,” he said.
Branch Chairman of NRCS in Cross River, Dr Ernest Ochang, said the building was erected in 1957 as a division of the British Red Cross in the state.
Ochang, a medical practitioner, said the remodeling of the building would boost activities of the branch office in the state.
According to him, the state branch of NRCS will continue to reach out to the IDPs in all camps in the state.
Head of Sub-Delegation of ICRC, South South and South East states, Mrs Heike Kemper, said Red Cross Committee would continue to support the IDPs appropriately.
The Acting Director General of Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, Mr Princewill Ayim, said that the collaboration with the NRCS in the state had helped in the welfare management of the IDPs.
Ayim assured the NRCS that the state government would continue to create the enabling environment for them to operate in the state.
