IYC Harps On Economic Restructuring, Resource Control
The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has added its voice to the call for restructuring of Nigeria’s economy and control of resources to guarantee peace and proper development of the nation.
President of IYC Worldwide, Barrister Oweilaemi Pereotubo who made this known to aviation correspondents on his arrival at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Thursday, explained that time has come when true federalism and resource control should be practised in the country.
He said quit notice and division of the country was not the best way, pointing out that the best way was for Nigerians to sit down and discuss so that every region can manage its resources.
According to him, the Ijaw youths are not interested in giving quit notice because Nigeria is one nation, and as such people have rights to choose where they want to live and earn their living.
“We do not want to give quit notice. We are one country, only that some people think that they are more Nigerian than others.
“That is the reason for all these at random quit notices you have every where in the country. That is not the best way. What we need is to sit down and dicuss, so that everybody can manage their resources.
“What we are asking is restructuring. Restructure this country in line with true and fiscal Federalism so that every state can manage its resources and pay tax to the centre”, Pereotubo said.
The IYC boss noted that the process of achieving that might be cumbersome, as nothing good comes easy, but expressed hope that everything will come to a successful end as expected.
He said that peace has returned to the IYC after pockets of agitations from the last election, and blamed insecurity on hunger as many youths are jobless and idle.
