Dep Gov Challenges Engineers On Professionalism

Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah(rtd), has challenged Nigerian engineers to be very functional in their practice of the profession by taking cognizance of the environment in which they operate.
He said this while speaking as a special guest of honour during a South-South Professional Forum Delegates Conference of the Nigerian Society of Engineers in Yenagoa.
While saying that engineering designs must be suitable to our peculiar environment, so as to have effective and workable results, the deputy governor decried the high cost of projects in the Niger Delta, when compared to other regions in the country.
Jonah, who is also an engineer, advised engineers to positively project and protect their profession, adding that, engineering was needed virtually in all facets of life.
He also applauded the mentorship programme of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Yenagoa Branch, stressing that, it was good for the growth of young engineers, who will acquire a lot of knowledge and experience from the attachment to their senior colleagues.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of the South-South Professional Forum of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Chief Odieari Oruye, had stated that, the forum, which currently has 14 branches, was essentially a platform to bring together, engineers from the South-South geo-political zone to forge a common front to articulate their interest at the national level. He congratulated the leadership of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Yenagoa Branch, for hosting the conference as well as its laudable achievements so far.
In his remarks, Chairman of NSE, Yenagoa Branch, Engr. Olaowei Indiamaowei, enumerated some of the achievements of the branch to include; having a current corporate membership of 150, seven fellows, registration of 66 candidates for this year’s April professional examinations as well as installation of a functional website.
Others are; holding of monthly public lectures, quarterly technical visits, placement of National Youth Service Corps members and Industrial Training students in relevant organisations and having four permanent secretaries in its fold.
Present at the occasion were; Secretary to the State Government; Chief Serena Dokubo-Spiff, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite, and that of Power, Chief Partner Jim-Ogbolo.
