The Rivers State Govern
ment has warned all those that are engaged in approving illegal building plans in the state to desist from such unwholesome act.
The Commissioner for Urban Development and Physical Planning, Hon. Chinyere Igwe gave the warning yesterday while interacting with newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He explained that those behind the approval of illegal building plans were denying the state government revenue for developmental projects and urged members of the public to report the impersonators directly to him.
According to him, the reason why the Ministry gives “X” mark on a building is either that the building did not follow the due process for registration or that such building cannot be sited there, and that the person concerned need to get clearance from the Ministry.
“Ministry is a professional Ministry with town planners, and we ensure that things are done well and in accordance with the law.
“The reason why we don’t have many building collapse in the state is because of the proactiveness of staff of the Ministry who ensure that proper things are done”, he said.
On operation garden city restoration and war against street trading, the Commissioner said that government was determined to restore the beauty of the garden city and would follow due process in doing that.
“Illegal Motor Parks must go. We cannot have parks and markets everywhere on the streets and roads of Port Harcourt”, Igwe stated.
He said that government had been meeting with the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and that a committee would be set up soon to address the issue.
The Commissioner also called on traders and tanker drivers operating along the Rumuolumeni road to quit, saying that they would soon swing into action.
