Union Urges FG To Create More Jobs In Agric
The newly elected president, Agricultural and Allied Employees Union of Nigeria (AAEUN), Mr Abdullahi Buguda, on Thursday, urged the Federal Government to implement policies that would create more jobs in the agricultural sector.
Speaking with newsmen in Lagos, Buguda noted that only the development of agriculture could reduce poverty and employment among Nigerian youths.
“The mono-economy we are practising is not helping the nation; if government develops the agricultural sector, it will open new jobs and insecurity problem will be solved,’’ Buguda said.
According to him, the increase in kidnappings, robbery and other violent crimes across the nation is due to the high rate of unemployment and poverty.
He said that most youths have refused to participate in agriculture, and that a situation where Nigeria, with a population of over 140 million is fed by a few old farmers, was not sustainable.
“The government that refuses to create food security will be creating problems in future”, said the AAEUN president.
He called on the Federal Government to concentrate on agriculture to create massive job opportunities as was being done in countries like Brazil, Indonesia and India.
He also urged the government to reduce the prices of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs to boost local food production in the country.
The new AAEUN president promised to attract more members to the union from various affiliates.
“We have many private agricultural agencies in fishery and plantation in all the 36 states. We will bring them together so that we can grow,’’ he said.
Bugudu also said that his administration would negotiate better salary and allowances for its members in the private and public sectors.
