Flood Sacks Communty In Lagos
Residents of Bogije
community in Ibeju Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, have been rendered homeless by flood which has made the entire area inaccessible.
The Tide learnt that out of the 20 houses including a church, 18 have been deserted, leaving only two whose occupants are now leaving in fear.
It was also gathered that the worst hit is Salami street which has become a no go area.
The road linking the place to the expressway had been overtaken by water, leaving some of the residents to be peeping through windows and doors.
Some of the residents who spoke to The Tide, said that government ought to have constructed a canal to channel water from the area to the Lagoon to provide a good drainage to the area and allow the trapped water to flow. Mrs. Kemi Paul, a resident told The Tide that since she moved to the area seven years ago, she has not had such a dreadful experience and blamed the flood on bad drainage system.
She noted that before now, all the landlords constructed rack with concrete to prevent such occurrence, but the water level has submerged it adding that the church which also housed the pastor has been taken over by flood.
“We have decided to construct drainage system, but we learnt that some people have done that before, but the community did not allow them to pass it through the right channel to make it work. It was later dug in a wrong place,” she said.
She said that they have visited the local council chairman’s office twice but that the chairman, Kemi Suraka was not available.
