Rivers Deputy Speaker Condemns Asaba Bomb Blast
The Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Dumnamene Deekor has described last Monday’s bomb attack in Warri, Delta State that disrupted the Niger Delta post-amnesty peace talks organised by the Vanguard newspaper, as very unfortunate and embarrassing to the people of Niger Delta region.
Hon Deekor who made the condemnation yesterday while speaking to Assembly correspondents in his office added that the timing of the bomb attack was very wrong considering the nation’s present predicament.
He stated that the mission of the personalities who gathered at Asaba was to further advance the cause of the peaceful resolution of Federal Government’s Niger Delta Post Amnesty programme in the region.
The deputy speaker explained that the meeting had already begun when the bomb exploded causing everybody to scamper for their dear lives.
He thanked the Almighty God for the safe return of all the Rivers State delegates to the peace talk adding that every Rivers delegate returned to the state unhurt.
The number two state lawmaker who was part of the state delegation averred that the bomb attack was uncalled for in view of the position of a Niger Deltan, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan as Acting President.
He opined that the acting president has all it takes to address the problems of the Niger Delta region especially the Post-Amnesty programme and urged the people to embrace peace and remain calm.
“You will agree with me that it was not easy but the president, Alhaji Musa Yar’ Adua went on to say that the amnesty programme must be. I’m sure that the acting president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan is passionate about the programme” he stated.
The lawmaker advised the people of the region and those behind Monday’s bomb attack at the post amnesty peace talk, to desist from violence as it would not solve the problem.
It would be recalled that a bomb blast in Warri Delta State on Monday brought to a halt a post amnesty peace talk organised by the Vanguard Newspapers.
Although, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has claimed responsibility for the bombs blast that went off near the venue of the Delta State Governor’s office Annex.
The MEND spokes- person Jomo Gbomo said the action was in reaction to a statement credited to Dr. Uduaghan that the group was dead.
