NUJ Wants More Schools For Physically Challenged
The Nigerian Union of
Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, has appealed to the state government to establish more schools for persons with disabilities in the state.
Chairman of the Union, Opaka Dokubo, who said this during a courtesy call on him by the South- South Zone of the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA) in his office, also urged for the signing of the Disability Bill into law.
Mr. Dokubo said that persons with disabilities are like any other human beings and therefore deserved to be given education. He stressed that the education of the physically challenged must never be politicized.
The NUJ chairman said that journalists would not shy away from assisting organisations working on education, stressing that everybody must be given the opportunity to develop.
The South South Coordinator of the coalition, Mr Tamunoala Bright said that the group was Made up of 40 NGOs working on education, stressing that the group envisages a Nigeria in which every individual has access to quality education.
“CSACEFA seeks to strengthen the capacity of Nigerian Civil Society and other stakeholders to advocate for access to free, compulsory and quality education for all”, he said.
He said that the theme for thus year is “Education and Disability,” saying that the visit was to sensitise opinion leaders on what the global week is all about .
Mr Bright who expressed regretted over the fact that Rivers State had only one school for the physically challenged, urged the state government to not only build more centres for training of persons with disabilities but also signal the bill into law.
He said that the bill once sign into law, will create opportunities for more centres for the education of persons with disabilities.
