Oil Spills: FG Plans Clean-up In Niger Delta
The Federal government says it is working on a programme to identify all environmentally impacted sites in the Niger Delta with a view to applying the appropriate technology in their clean-up.
The Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Chief Ufot Ekaette disclosed this at the 18th Ogoni day celebration in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area.
Chief Ekaette also said that the government is planning mega projects that will benefit many communities in the region.
The Minister commended the Ogonis for their non violent approach to the Niger Delta crisis and urged other ethnic groups in the region to emulate it.
In his welcome address the President of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) Mr. Ledum Mitee said that the Ogonis will begin a new phase of the struggle to achieve the goal encapsulated in the Ogoni Bill of Rights.
Mr. Mitee who commended the federal government for its decision to replace Shell as an oil operator in Ogoni land, however urged the government to ensure that the decision is implemented.
The MOSOP president also said that the movement had commenced a formal request for the creation of a Bori State.
“We have commenced a formal request for the creation of a Bori State. I must place on record the encouraging support we have so far received from our sons and daughters in government”.
The MOSOP president also urged youths in the area to eschew violence, stressing that they must refrain from being used as political thugs.
