Rape: FIDA Rejects Out Of Court Settlement
The Chairperson,
International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Bayelsa chapter, Mrs Pere Egbuson, has urged rape victims to reject-out-of court settlement.
Egbuson who made the call in an interview in Yenagoa said out-of-court settlement of rape cases was counter-productive and against the global efforts to check sexual abuses of women and minors.
The FIDA chairperson said rape cases had been on the increase, and expressed regrets that many victims were reluctant to prosecute the matter in court due to fear of stigmatisation.
She urged the victims to speak out without fear or favour, and contact FIDA when faced with challenges of rape.
According to her, FIDA, as an organisation of professional lawyers, will continue to protect rape victims to prosecute offenders.
She urged parents and guardians to always report rape cases to the police, and assured that when notified, FIDA would pursue the case to logical conclusion.
Egbuson urged parents and guardians to be more vigilant and watchful of their children, especially the girl child.
The FIDA chairperson pointed out that the constitution had prescribed life imprisonment for offenders, and urged judicial officers to treat rape cases with all seriousness.
According to her, many offenders of rape cases have been discovered to be people who are close to the children such as parents’ drivers, lesson teachers and neighbours.
She said FIDA in the state, would continue to educate and sensitise the society on the dangers of rape against children and women.
Egbuson said that the role of the organisation was to advance the welfare, promote and protect the rights of women and children in particular, and the society in general.
