NIMET Assures Stakeholders Of Safe Air Travels
The Director General, Ni
gerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), Dr Anthony Auforom, has assured stakeholders of safer air travel based on the acquisition of a new technology that has the capability of accurately analysing numerical weather prediction (NWP) across the country’s airports.
Dr Auforom said weather related harzards due to inaccurate weather prediction is said to be the major contributor to global air crashes.
The Director General gave the assurance recently in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the evaluation of the agency’s 2013 rainfall predictions and its target of attaining the ISO 17025 certification of the International Civil Aviation organisation (ICAO) Instrument calibration laboratory.
According to him, weather related hazards due to inaccurate weather prediction is said to be the major contributor to global air crashes.
He however, warned that the middle belt zone of Jos, Gombe, Kaduna and Bauchi would be susceptible to flooding before the cessation of rainfall season.
Dr Auforom, said Nigeria is now set to enjoy safe, secure and comfortable air transport because of the new device which is capable of capturing accurate weather Phenomenon in Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt airports.
“NIMET-COSMO model is a non-hydrostatic limited area atmospheric prediction model adapted from the COSMO-DWD”, he said noting that the workstation is designed for numerical weather prediction and for various scientific applications in the aviation sector.
The Director General said the device which guarantees accurate weather prediction represents a new frontier in the history of NIMET Operations.
