Lawyers Laud FG’ s Counter Terrorism Approach
The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) on Thursday commended the Federal Government for checkmating the activities of terrorists and terrorist organisations in Nigeria.
NBA National President, Mr Okey Wali (SAN),said that the association had recommended tough measures to address the security challenges in the country.
Wali, who spoke at the National Executive Council meeting of the NBA in Yenagoa, urged the military to keep to their rules of engagement.
He observed that the rift in the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) had distracted the governors from performing their constitutional roles and expressed regrets that the NGF which ought to promote good governance had been hijacked for the selfish interest of the political class against the general good of the citizenry.
Wali urged the governors to resolve their differences and devote their energies on developing their various states.
Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa expressed regrets that the nation was not practicing true federalism as the laws annexed the resources that belonged to the regions.
He said that the laws that dispossessed the oil bearing communities were enacted by military administrations and should be reviewed to ensure resources were in the control of their natural owners.
“I have always said that what the rest part of the world call oil blocks are ancestral properties of the Niger Delta people, the Petroleum Act and Land Use Act are full of contradictions. “And when you look back you see that these laws were products of military dictatorships and did not follow democratic norms. “So, it is a challenge to all democrats to see that these laws are reviewed,” Dickson said.
