The Military Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta has arrested three vessels and seven barges along Opobo River in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The arrested vessels and barges were allegedly used in crude oil theft in the area.
The media co-ordinator of the JTF, Lt-Col Onyema Nwachukwu told newsmen in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State recently said the operation of the taskforce also led to the scuffling of 75 wooden boats (Cotonou boats) conveying illegal petroleum projects at Ogbokodo creek and Ugbokolo areas of Warri South-West of Delta State.
Lt Col Nwachukwu said 175 suspects were arrested during the operation and that they have been handed over to the security agencies.
According to him, 362 illegal local crude oil refineries were destroyed during its patrol of the region, adding that they were destroyed in Kolokolo area of Bisigbo in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Igbomotoro and Sangana communities in Bayelsa State.
He stated that the new JTF Commander, Major-Gen Bata Debiro’s counter strategy to stamp out oil bunkering in the Niger Delta was yielding positive results, pointing out that, “Debiro had already embarked on an appraisal tour of troops’ deployments, including Naval Forward Operational Basses (FOB) in Brass, Bonny and Escravas”.
