Bayelsa School Wins Science Competition
Billary Secondary School, Yenagoa has won this year’s Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture (SDPC JV) science competition organized for secondary schools in Bayelsa State.
Obollo Grammar School, took the second position, while Jasper Boro College of Education Demonstration, and Devine Secondary Schools took third and fourth positions respectively.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the competition held at Ijaw House, Yenagoa, the Managing Director of SDPC, Mr Mutiu Sunmonu said the competition was aimed at complementing existing efforts at developing science education in the state.
Mr Sunmonu who is also the country chair of Shell Companies in Nigeria, said the company was constructing a model school at Okaka/Epie at the cost of N142 million.
Sunmonu said SPDC JV in collaborations with Intel and the State Ministry of Education has successfully held the second edition of a new initiative called Teachers’ Development Programme (TDP) with 100 science teachers drawn from various schools as participants.
Represented by Evans Krukrubo, Sunmonu further said that the competition which started in 2009 was “focus on science education because graduate recruitment exercise has highlighted the dearth of candidates from Bayelsla State possessing relevant qualifications in employment.”
He, therefore, commended the students and teachers of the participating schools for embracing the programme.
