Delta Govt Receives N24bn From SURE-P Fund
The Delta Government has said that it received N24 billion from the Federal Government‘s Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) between May, 2011 and December 2012.
The state Commissioner for Finance, Mr Bernard Okumagba, made this known in Asaba at a media conference on the budget breakdown of the state’s 2013 budget.
Okumagba said that the State Government received N1. 2 billion monthly from the fund, being managed by a committee headed by Chief Christopher Kolade, which was set up by the Federal Government in 2012.
He said that greater part of the amount received from the programme was spent on some special projects approved by Gov. Emmanuel Uduaghan and the state’s Executive Council.
The commissioner added that the state’s Direct Labour Agency got N2 billion from the funds, for roads rehabilitation.
“Part of the money was spent by the government during the flood disaster in the state and we also deplored N343 million into our micro-credit scheme. “And, the residue from the funds in 2012 has been transferred to 2013,” he added.
He also disclosed that part of the funds that would accrue to the state from SURE-P in 2013, would be used to create no fewer than 10,000 jobs for youths.
According to him, the jobs will be in traffic control, environmental monitoring and security.
On the State Government’s huge recurrent expenditure profile, Okumagba said that the state would review its N6.4 billion monthly salary bill through aggressive staff audit
The commissioner said that the measure would block leakages, check ghost workers syndrome and other vices in the systems.
He also said that efforts were being made by the government to reduce other overheads expenditure in 2013.
