Monarch Urges FG To Mop Up Arms
The Ovie of Umiagwa-Abraka Kingdom in Delta, Air Vice Marshall Lucky Ararile (Rtd), has urged the Federal Government to embark on general disarmament in the country.
Ararile who made the call when the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, visited him in Abraka on Friday, identified the proliferation of small arms as one of the reasons for the rising wave of kidnapping and associated crimes in the society.
He said that the mop-up of the arms would stem the tide. According to him, more than seven million small arms are in circulation in the country. The availability of the weapons encouraged criminality. He said. “Efforts must be made by the various levels of government to disarm the people in the country; this is most fundamental.’’
He said that information flow was vital in checking crimes and advised the government to strengthen the synergy with GSM communication outfits and employ other technologies to enable security agencies to fight crime.
The monarch also underscored the need to create jobs for the teeming unemployed people in the country and suggested that welfare schemes should also be worked out to support unemployed persons in the country.
He commended the Inspector- General of Police, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, for the dismantling road blocks and also appealed to the government to adequately address logistics issues relating to the deployment, mobility, and feeding of police personnel, among other issues, to enable them to function effectively.
The monarch thanked Aduba and the command for their intervention in checking the menace of kidnapping in Abraka, especially with regard to the university.
The Ovie pledged to sensitise his subjects on their roles and warned the youths against taking to crime.
Earlier, Aduba had called for the support and collaboration of the monarch toward sensitising the people and in the area of intelligence gathering.
