‘Nigeria Spent N1trn On Fuel Subsidy’ …Senator Tasks FG On Refineries

Published

on

Nigeria has spent not less than N1trillion on fuel subsidy payment in 2012, Senator Magnus Abe, representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District has said. He called on the Federal Government to revive local refineries to curb the huge funding.

The Senator said in 2012 the subsidy payment crashed drastically due to the probe and other measures put in place by the National Assembly.

Speaking at the second interactive session with youths and students from the senatorial district on Monday in Bera, Gokana Local Government Area, Abe submitted that one solution to the huge fund expended on fuel subsidy was to build and revive local refineries.

“There was no justification for subsidy because it is not productive. We should insist that Nigerian crude be refined in Nigeria,” he said.

He also called for more communities’ participation on the debate on Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) pointing out that 10 percent derivation principle was not too much for oil producing communities, adding that if the PIB was well structured it would enhance livelihood of the people.

Meanwhile, Senator Abe has explained the rationale behind his focus on youths and education saying youths are the future of the country.

He said, “being able to interface with the youths solves lots of society problems. So our emphasis on young people is because we know that everything we do for young persons we do for the entire society”.

The former Secretary to the Rivers State Government further disclosed his plan to support enterprising young people and women, “helping women is helping the micro-economy”.

He disclosed his intention to commence a special skills training scheme next year in collaboration with Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA), and implored youths from the zone not to relent in their dreams as determination is the hallmark of success.

NLC, TUC Bicker Over N70,000 Transport Allowance For Workers

Published

on

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, has questioned the Trade Union Congress’ (TUC) rejection of the Federal Government’s proposed ?70,000 transport allowance, saying the union was not involved in negotiations with the government.

Ajaero said the NLC had made it clear from the beginning that it was negotiating independently of the TUC, making the latter’s opposition to the outcome surprising.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief, yesterday, Ajaero said the TUC did not sign the agreement and argued that the union should not oppose an arrangement it did not negotiate.

“Why is TUC challenging what was gotten for the workers when we stated clearly that NLC was acting alone?” Ajaero asked.

“The agreement was not signed by TUC, and you don’t kick against something that you didn’t negotiate, you never asked for,” he added.

The NLC president said he would have preferred the TUC to demand a higher allowance so that both unions could negotiate with the government towards a common position.

“I would have preferred a situation whereby if NLC was asking for one naira, TUC would be asking for 10 naira, and probably the government would harmonise it,” Ajaero said.

The NLC president recalled that the disagreement began after the TUC president reportedly said the minimum wage would be due for negotiation in August 2027.

Ajaero said the NLC disagreed with that position, insisting that it was inconsistent with the law, and proceeded with its own engagement with the government.

He said the TUC had also distanced itself from the process after reports emerged that both labour centres were jointly meeting with the government.

“When we started the first meeting, the media reported that NLC and TUC had a meeting. They threatened us and said they are not part of it,” he said.

Ajaero added that the NLC subsequently issued a statement clarifying that it was acting alone in the negotiations.

“We came out with a statement that NLC is on this alone; we are not with TUC. So, I would be surprised why TUC would be challenging what was gotten for the workers,” he said.

On calls for a wage increase, Ajaero argued that such an adjustment could not be granted without a formal process involving the relevant stakeholders.

Does the government dash wage increase? There must be a process put in place,” he said.

He noted that the same TUC had called for the process to begin in August 2027, adding that the NLC had advocated that the relevant committee commence work immediately.

Ajaero said he remained concerned about the TUC’s position on the transport allowance, questioning why the union would reject an arrangement it had not negotiated or secured.

“I have been worried for some time now, why you say you reject something that was not given to you,” he said.

Recall that the TUC had rejected the proposed ?70,000 wage award and demanded an immediate salary increase for workers.

It said temporary wage awards are inadequate to address the economic hardship facing Nigerian workers, insisting the Federal Government should implement a salary increase instead.

The congress stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its President, Festus Osifo, and Secretary-General, N.A. Toro.

The TUC also accused the Federal Government of failing to fully fulfil its 2023 wage award obligations to some workers and of neglecting a seven-month-old agreement on the adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers under the Joint Health Sector Unions.

Rivers Judiciary Declares Nov 5 Court Free Day

Published

on

The Rivers State Judiciary has declared Thursday, November 5, 2026, a court-free day to enable members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Port Harcourt Branch, to participate in the annual conference of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) Nigeria.

The notice was signed by the branch secretary, Rachel C. Princewill,  who urged members to take note of the decision and be guided accordingly.

According to the notification, the court-free day is intended to facilitate the participation of lawyers in the annual conference, which is scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The conference is expected to bring together legal practitioners and other stakeholders in the administration of justice and the field of arbitration to discuss issues relating to dispute resolution and professional practice.

The announcement provides members of the Bar an opportunity to participate in the professional gathering without the usual demands of court proceedings on the designated date.

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is a professional body associated with the promotion and development of arbitration and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.

Arbitration remains an important mechanism for resolving commercial and other disputes outside conventional court litigation, helping parties explore alternatives to lengthy judicial proceedings.

The annual conference is therefore an important professional engagement for practitioners interested in strengthening their knowledge of arbitration and related dispute-resolution processes.

Members of the NBA Port Harcourt Branch have consequently been advised to make the necessary arrangements to attend the conference on the scheduled date.

The notification reaffirms the branch’s commitment to keeping members informed of developments affecting their professional engagements and participation in activities aimed at advancing legal practice.

The Tide had reported last week that the NBA had appealed to the State Chief Judge to declare free days for lawyers during the conference.
