NDDC, Govt Partner To Improve Literacy
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) says it will partner government to improve the literacy level in the country.
The Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr Chris Oboh, made the statement last Thursday in Uyo, at the opening of a workshop, tagged, “Revamping Adult Literacy for Sustainable Development in the Niger Delta Region”.
Oboh, who was represented by Mrs Christy Atako, Director of Education in the commission, stressed the need for the adoption of the public private partnership model to improve the literacy level in the area.
“The NDDC, while keying into these partnerships and collaborations to raise the literacy level in the region, is also advocating a cross-sector partnership model provided for in the NDDC Master Plan. “With this, every sector will have the opportunity to bring to the table their strengths and competencies, maximise resources, reduce duplication and eliminate unnecessary rivalry,” he said.
Oboh expressed regret that such rivalry constituted the bane of development in the region.
The managing director stated that the workshop was organised to create awareness on the need to build a virile and strong people who would drive the economy of the area.
He said that the importance of literacy could not be over-emphasised, adding that this could lead to poverty reduction and improvement in the quality of life of the people.
“Literacy in every respect promotes growth and accounts for the high rate of technological and economic advancement of the nation,” he added.
He, however, lamented the rate of illiteracy in Nigeria, especially among adults.
Oboh noted that there was higher rate of adult illiteracy in the urban areas than rural areas.
He regretted that much as illiterate persons would like to be literate, they lacked awareness of existence of any literacy centres, a trend he said, negated their dreams.
