Shell Donates To Flood Victims In Bayelsa
Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, has donated relief materials estimated at over #75 million to flood displaced persons in Bayelsa State.
Handing over the 12 trucks containing assorted materials such as food stuffs, soap, foams, bed sheets, cooking pots, buckets and toiletries, to the Bayelsa State branch of Red Cross International, Managing Director of the company, Mr, Mutiu Sumonu said the company is touched to demonstrate its magnanimity in other to cushion the effect of the flood on victims in the area.
Mr Sumonu said, the donation is aimed at cushioning the effects of the flood on the victims, revealing that the sum of $100million had earlier been donated to 24 states of the Federation that suffered flooding in their environment.
He further said that Shell has made similar donations to their affected host communities of Rivers and Delta States, pleading that the only way the donations could be justify is for those in charge to judiciously distribute the items equitably to those affected.
The Managing Director, who further said that a team of medical experts and drugs have been despatched to the camps, stressed that he had to personally hand over the materials because of his concern for th welfare of the victims.
Receiving the donations on behalf of Red Cross in Bayelsa State, Mr Monovie Ogbara expressed gratitude to Shell management for their benevolent gesture, lamenting the state was worst hit by flood.
Mr Ogbara said the items will go a long way to cushion the suffering of the victims, promising that the organisation will give account of every item it received on behalf of the people.
However, while appealing for donations, Mr Ogbara commended the state government for all steps taking so far to assist the flood victims.
