CLO Alerts On Spate Of Crimes In N’Delta
The Secretary of Civil Liberty Organisation in Bayelsa
State, Comrade Morris Alagoa, has voiced his concern over the seeming increase
in banditry along the water routes in both Bayelsa and Rivers State, and
therefore called on Federal Government to take extra measures to check the
trend.
Comrade Alagoa, who made the observation in a press release
issued to journalists in Yenagoa, remarked that with the offer and acceptance
of amnesty coupled with military presence in the area, one expected that
organised crimes such as kidnapping, piracy and robbery would be minimised in
the region.
Comrade Alagoa stated that the recent cases of piracy and
kidnapping in the water ways of the Niger Delta, especially in Rivers and
Bayelsa States had further heightened anxiety and also provoked fear for those
using the creeks and water routes for their daily businesses.
He suggested that federal and state governments should join
hands to create special security units that would patrol the water ways to
ensure safety of travellers and sailors.
“The government should redouble efforts at, not only
effectively combating these violent crimes; but fight corruption head-on and
provide jobs for the teeming unemployed youths and enabling environment for
business to thrive in the country”
In his response to the press release, the Media Coordinator
of the JTF, Lt. Col. Onyenka Nwachukwu said though few incidents of violent
crimes and piracy were recorded in the last few weeks, such isolated cases can
not be said to have provoked high rate of insecurity along the waterways and
creeks of the region,
“They can not say that the incidence of sea piracy is on the
high side. We have our men along the waters and they are doing their best in
providing security along the sea routes” “We have our men and boats along the
waters and creeks. It is even evident in the rising successes recorded against
the crude oil theft in the region. It is unfortunate that some incidents
happened but they are not pronounced and have been considered isolated cases,”
he said.
