Dickson Inaugurates Four Boards
The Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson, has
inaugurated the State Universal Basic
Education Board (SUBEB) with Mrs Florence Abutu William-Ebi as chairman while
Mr. Washington Liverpool Akpobolokemi is to serve as executive secretary.
Other members are Mr. Stephen Kayama, Mr. Moses Cleopas, Mr.
Ene Ketebu , Chief .I. Ebiowei, Mr. Ngo Iwowari and Mr. Austin Dressman.
Speaking at the ceremony in
Government House Yenagoa, Governor Dickson described their role as
critical to the successful implementation of government’s new educational
policy for the state.
While reminding them of the importance of their
responsibility, he urged them to approach the assignment with seriousness.
The governor noted that government, in its bid to reorganize
the policy on education, especially in public primary and secondary schools
which are virtually in a state of collapse, had taken concrete steps to
reposition the sub-sector with the declaration of a state of emergency.
This, he explained, informed government’s decision to adopt
the policy of free and compulsory education for pupils and students in primary
and secondary schools in addition to the provision of free school uniforms,
sandals, bags and other learning and teaching materials.
Governor Dickson further stated that the new primary schools
to be constructed across the nooks and crannies of the state will have
functional and well stocked libraries, information and communication technology
(ICT) rooms, well ventilated lavatories as well as headmasters’ quarters and
accommodation for the teachers.
According to him, government expects total commitment,
dedication and selfless service from the members, stressing that the effort put
into the job will determine the future of the state.
While assuring them of his support to enable the board
function effectively, he urged them to work closely with the Ministry of
Education, which is the supervisory ministry.
Other boards and commissions inaugurated are the Bayelsa
State Independent Electoral Commission with Chief Ipigasin Izagara as chairman,
Local Government Service Commission with a former speaker of the old Rivers
State House of Assembly, Hon. Talford Ongolo as chairman.
Others are the Bayelsa State House of Assembly Service
Commission with Mr Ajoko Peredigha as chairman.
