Price Of Cement Soars In C’River
The price of cement in different markets in Cross River has gone up by 20 per cent, sources told our correspondent.
The survey showed that a bag of cement which used to cost between N1,600 and N1,650 now goes for between N1,800 and N2,000 at various sales outlets in the state.
At the Watt Market for building materials, a bag of the Unicem brand of cement which was formerly sold at N1,650 in January now sells for N2,000, indicating about 21 per cent rise in price.
Also, at the Timber Market, the same Unicem cement goes for between N1,800 and N1,900 as against N1700 sold earlier in the year.
At other sales outlets, such as the Ikot-Ishi and Marian, the prices of other brands of cement like the Dangote, Elephant and others hovered around N2,000 per bag.
Some of the stakeholders who spoke to our correspondent on the issue said the rise in price could be associated with the cost of production and an increase in demand.
A cement dealer in Timber Market, Mr Osita Izuchukwu, said he and other dealers sold the products based on how it was bought from the manufacturers.
“We sell as we buy from the manufacturers. If they add money, we also increase our price,” he said.
A building contractor, Mr Allen Johnson, said the increase was not surprising, saying “at this time of the year, items such as cement normally increase due to the cost of production.
“I do not think it is deliberate because prices of building materials, particularly cement, usually go up at this time of the year.’’
On his part, Mr Chris Abang, a resident of Calabar, however advised that buyers should not panic as the price would crash very soon.
“We have been used to stories of cement going up and coming down. So, it is not new. It will come down when the times comes,” he said.
