Killer Squad Hits Niger Delta Varsity
Suspected killer squad has emerged in the Bayelsa State owned Niger Delta University (NDU).
Already serious death and mysterious disappearance of students and staff have been on the increase in the past few months.
The latest victim according to a source close to the university is a year four engineering student who was and killed, dumped at the school’s gate a few days ago.
The final year student was said to have been axed to death at 12 midnight of the fateful day and some vital parts of his body removed.
The incident preceeded the death of another student who was chased to the nearby Amassoma river and drowned, and his corpse was not recovered uptil date.
Yet in another incident, the driver of the institution’s registrar whose name was given as Stanley Soukiri was kidnapped, and his dead body was later discovered under a footbridge, in an advanced stage of decomposition.
His assassins did not only mutilate his body but also cut-off his tongues and private parts.
Just a week ago, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, one Mr Amazike died mysteriously in his sleep and was buried few days before the present killing of the part-four student of Engineering Department.
When The Tide visited the University, some students were seen discussing the incidents in low tunes. A female student who chose to be anonymous claimed that the killings and disappearance of students especially the females were regular occurrence, adding, “only God is helping us because you don’t know the next victim’’
A lecturer at the university was very aggressive when approached to comment on the incidents, “what do you want to know from me, even though we just lost our PRO, don’t you know the office of the VC and the Registrar?
Both the Vice Chancellor and the Registrar were said to be attending crucial management meeting when The Tide called in their offices
However, the State Police Command image maker, Mr Eguavon Emokpae confirmed the incident to newsmen, saying, investigations were on to unravel the deaths.
Meanwhile, the State Governor, Chief Seriake Dickson has directed the state security agencies to look into the matter.
A press statement signed by the Senior Media and Public Affairs Assistant, Mr Daniel Iwariso Markson reads; ‘’Report over the brutal murder of an undergraduate student of the Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, has just been brought to our notice and government is working closely with the various security agencies to get to the root of the matter.
The statement also stressed the present administration’s willingness and firm resolve to confront the various security issues thrown up by activities of cult groups and militants with the seriousness that it deserves.
‘I have directed that thorough investigation be carried out and that the perpetrators should immediately be fished out and brought to book. We are clear in our resolve to maintain a zero tolerance for crime and criminality,’ the statement quoted the Bayelsa State governor.
