Oshiomhole Assures Of Effective Erosion Control
Governor of Edo Adams Oshiomhole State has assured the people of the state that the perennial erosion and flood problems in Benin City would soon be addressed with the completion of the storm water project.
He gave the assurance during an inspection tour of the 13-feet deep channel being constructed on the New Lagos Road to link the canal at Five Junction area.
“I am satisfied with the construction work. We have to reclaim the moat to enable us to construct a canal in the area to serve as a receptacle for erosion coming from different points.”
Oshiomhole assured the people of government’s resolve to tackle erosion problems in the state, and urged the construction firm to expedite action on the completion of the project.
The Commissioner for Works, Mr Francis Evbuomwan, explained that what was being done was the filling and compaction of the canal, adding that when completed, it would act as a receptacle for flood water from different areas.
“The flood water coming from Uselu is transmitted to Ikpoba River. It is about four metres deep and twenty five metres wide.”
Some residents of the area commended the governor for initiating the project.
They noted with regret that past governments ignored their pleas for such a project, which had made many of the residents to vacate the area.
