The Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Retd), has pledged the full support of the state government to the Nigerian Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in its mission to bridge the energy access gap, particularly in underserved and rural communities across the state.

The Administrator made this commitment while receiving a delegation from the REA, led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, at the Government House in Port Harcourt, yesterday.

This was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to the Administrator on Media, Hector Igbikiowubo.

In his remarks, Ibas stated that rural electrification is more than just providing light but it is also about igniting hope, fostering innovation, and empowering communities to build a self-reliant future.

He noted that since assuming office as the State administrator, his administration has prioritized security, infrastructure development, and economic recovery as key pillars of the state’s transformation agenda.

According to him, “A critical component of our agenda is rural electrification, which directly impacts education, healthcare delivery, agricultural productivity, and microeconomic enterprises.

“Through collaboration with agencies like the REA, we aim to bridge the energy access gap for rural communities, stimulate small-scale industries, and unlock new potentials for our people.”

The Administrator acknowledged the unique difficulties posed by the state’s riverine terrain, stressing the need for innovative solutions to deliver electricity to remote communities.

He commended the REA for its preliminary mapping and survey efforts while urging the agency to factor in these geographical challenges in its implementation plans.

“The task of building a modern, secure, and economically vibrant Rivers State requires strong partnerships. The REA, with its mission and expertise, is a critical ally in realizing the energy infrastructure needed to unlock the full potential of our rural communities,” he said.

Ibas highlighted how improved energy access would enhance small-scale economic activities, support livelihoods, and boost productivity in rural areas.

He also underscored its ripple effects on education, healthcare, and other social sectors.

In his response, the REA boss reaffirmed the agency’s mandate to provide reliable electricity to rural dwellers, regardless of location or occupation.

Aliyu assured Rivers State of the REA’s readiness to deploy mini-grids and other sustainable solutions to address electricity deficits in off-grid communities.

“We urge the people of Rivers State to expect impactful partnerships that will deliver electricity to underserved areas, enabling economic growth and improving quality of life,” he stated.
