Foundation Trains Youths On Peace Building, Conflict Management

A peace-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in Niger Delta, has trained 90 youths from across the region as Peace Champions and Ambassadors.
The intensive capacity training, which took place at Toscana Hotel in GRA, Port Harcourt, recently, focused on early conflicts warning and response to avert conflict from escalation to crisis situation.
Speaking with newsmen shortly after the training, the Capacity Building Coordinator of the Foundation, Dr Chukwudi Njoku, said the programme was a cardinal objective of the foundation intended to train youths to be involved in peace building process and development in the Niger Delta region.
As members of the partnership for peace network of the partnership initiative in the Niger Delta, he said the participants are expected to contribute to conflicts resolution as response actors, by identifying and reporting early warning and early response for effective conflict management system in the oil rich region.
The Coordinator noted that despite the fluctuating indices of conflicts in Niger Delta, there was a remarkable improvement in peace building.
He noted that the major mandate of the programme is to improve peace and livelihood in the Niger Delta, saying that the key areas of concern include, leadership, volunteerism, conflicts analysis and management.
On his part, a peace building expert and trainer, Mr Abiodun Akombi, said the objective of the programme was to introduce the participants to early warning in conflicts with the target of working with relevant stakeholders in monitoring peace building process at their various communities.
Some of the participants who spoke with the press thanked the foundation for the training and assured that the experience will be put to use.
One of them, Mr Temple Halliday, said the training of youth to be part of the peace building process in the Niger Delta was important as they are major actors in the Niger Delta conflict.
Another participant, Chisom Esther Wali, said she considered the training a privilege to enable her contribute to peace building in the region and wherever she finds herself.
