Rivers
… Moves To Reform Judiciary
In a bid to reposition the state judicial system to ensure the effective dispensation of Justice in the State, the Rivers State Government has scrapped some Departments in the Ministry of Justice.
The affected departments are: Environment and Ecology, Legal Services and Law Review departments.
The State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Hon. Worgu Boms said this while speaking during a one day seminar on “Further Reflection on Today law Practice, the Young Lawyer in Perspective” organized by young lawyer’s forum of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Port Harcourt branch.
The commissioner who was represented by the state Solicitor- General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr. Rufus Godwins also said that the ministry would no longer tolerate the situation whereby interlocutory injunctions granted by courts in the State lasted longer than necessary.
He said that the ministry was determined to turn things around as far as Justice delivery is concerned in the state.
While declaring the occasion opened, the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Iche Ndu described the seminar as relevant and instructive in view of the on-going transformation in all sectors of the nation.
The chief judge who was represented by Hon. Justice D-W. Okocha also stressed the need for high ethical conduct by the young lawyers.
Earlier in his welcome address, the chairperson of the Young Lawyers Forum, Rivers State, Mr. Bariyima S. Kpokpan described the Forum as the creation of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for all lawyers between 1-7 years post call.
He said that the idea was to give the new lawyers a platform to review and articulate the usually seeming challenges of every beginner with a view to overcoming them.
“One of the core objectives is welfarism. But more than that, it is for our professional development” he said.
