FRSC Warns Against Under Age Driving
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Delta State, has warned parents against allowing their under aged children to drive.
Mrs Uche Chukwurah of Issele-Uku Unit of the commission gave the warning at a workshop it organised for stakeholders and school children in Issele-Uku on Monday.
Chukwurah said with the busy nature of Nigerian roads during the ‘ember months’ and yuletide period, there was the need to caution parents and children on road hazards.
She said most hazards on the roads could be avoided if modern communication facilities were well utilised.
She held that the number of children and youths killed through Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) in the nation had become unacceptable, hence the workshop.
She stressed that if the United Nations Decade of Action for Safer Road Users must be achieved, parents must be up and doing by inculcating the right traffic and road use culture on the children.
The Zonal Commanding Officer (ZCO) Mr Yakubu Attah, represented by Mr Luka Ikpi, Sector Commander of Delta command, said the rate of (RTC) was very high during the ember months.
Attah added that the programme was designed to educate the public against the menace of the period with a view to stemming the tide.
He noted that it was on record that between January and September the number of RTC on the Issele-Uku axis of Delta was 99, with 779 people involved, 476 male and 269 females as well as 34 children.
He also said that 42 deaths were recorded in the crashes, 19 males, 20 females and three children, adding that 256 injuries were recorded.
Some students of selected schools present called on the FRSC to put in place punitive measures to stem the tide of underage drivers.
